This is an on-the-water clinic for kids 6-15 years-old who want to learn the basics of racing an Opti, including: how to setup the boat, sail upwind, sail downwind and start.
The clinic will be led by local junior sailor Alan Rochard, US National Team member in 2007-2008. (Ask Alan what it’s like to race in a 930-boat regatta in Lake Garda…)
About “Green Fleet” racing
(from the Opti home page at www.usoda.org): At Optimist regattas, sailors are put into an age group, called a fleet. Trophies are typically awarded to the top skippers in each age group, or fleet. White fleet is for skippers who are 10 and under. Blue fleet is for skippers who are 11 or 12. Red fleet is for skippers who are 13 to 15. Your “age” is based on the first day of the regatta, the skipper’s age at the end of the current year. At most regattas, the red, blue, and white fleets all start at the same time and race on the same course. The Green Fleet is a fleet for beginners for all ages, from 6 to 15 years. After a while, a green fleet sailor will typically move into their age-appropriate fleet. The purpose of the green fleet is to encourage novice sailors.
